Serious Games
Serious Games is the name given to digital games developed with objectives that go beyond entertainment. Based on the idea that playing is a pleasurable activity, serious games use the playful environment of games to address specific content. Such content requires the participation of experts in the content area to organize and adapt it to the game development process. Thus, considering the needs of the project, always guided by the content, the components of a serious game will be specified in order to adapt aesthetics, mechanics, story and technology to the target audience and budget.
Like digital games, serious games can be developed for different platforms and use different technologies, such as virtual reality, social networks, mobile computing and natural interaction, among others. The design of serious games must include intelligent systems to promote player engagement based on their interest in the game, enhancing the expected results of using the application. Thus, these games can make use of intelligent systems capable of monitoring and evaluating player interaction, using data from their actions to manage their progress and also adapt the gameplay.
Since 2006, LabTEVE has been researching and developing serious games related to various areas, such as education, health and training, among other possibilities, aimed at mobile platforms, personal computers and projection systems. Some of these games address the qualification of health professionals, the rehabilitation of stroke victims, the education of high school students, and technological exploration on the use of haptic systems. The serious games developed by LabTEVE can be accessed directly at projects page.
